Setup
- Stand or sit with a tall, neutral spine and shoulders relaxed.
- Place the hand of the side you wish to stretch behind your lower back to anchor the shoulder down.
- Look straight ahead with your chin tucked slightly to maintain a neutral neck.
How to do it
- Slowly tilt your head sideways, moving your ear toward the opposite shoulder (inclination).
- Gently rotate your chin upward toward the ceiling to introduce the extension component.
- Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds, exhaling deeply to allow the muscles to relax and lengthen.
- Slowly return to the starting position and repeat the process on the other side.
Form checklist
- Keep the anchored shoulder depressed and pulled away from your ear.
- Avoid shrugging the opposite shoulder upward toward the head.
- Ensure the movement is slow and controlled to prevent any sharp cervical strain.
- Maintain an upright torso without leaning your entire body to the side.
Pro tips
- Imagine creating as much physical space as possible between your earlobe and your shoulder tip.
- Focus on the mind-muscle connection by visualizing the muscle fibers lengthening from the base of the skull to the shoulder blade.
Make it harder
- While seated, grip the edge of your chair with the hand of the side being stretched to increase shoulder depression and tension.
- Apply very light manual assistance with the opposite hand to gently guide the head further into the stretch, but do not pull forcefully.
