Setup
- Set a barbell in a power rack at approximately hip to waist height.
- Stand with your back to the barbell and your feet hip-width apart.
- Reach behind you and grasp the bar with an overhand grip, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
How to do it
- Stand tall and slowly walk your feet forward until you feel a gentle stretch across your chest and the front of your shoulders.
- Inhale deeply into your chest, and as you exhale, allow your shoulders to relax back and down.
- Hold the position for 30-60 seconds, maintaining a steady, controlled breathing pattern.
- To finish, slowly walk your feet back toward the bar to release the tension before letting go.
Form checklist
- Keep your chest lifted and avoid shrugging your shoulders toward your ears.
- Maintain a neutral spine; do not excessively arch your lower back to create more reach.
- Keep a slight, soft bend in your elbows to prevent joint hyperextension.
- Ensure your head remains in a neutral position, looking straight ahead.
Pro tips
- Actively squeeze your shoulder blades together to intensify the stretch on the pectoral muscles.
- Focus on expanding your ribcage with every inhale to create a stretch from the inside out.
Make it harder
- Slowly lower your hips into a partial squat while holding the bar to shift the angle of the stretch higher up the chest.
- Narrow your grip on the barbell to increase the leverage and intensity on the anterior deltoids.
