Setup
- Stand 3 to 5 feet away from a solid, reinforced wall.
- Hold the medicine ball with both hands at chest height, elbows tucked slightly.
- Position your feet shoulder-width apart in an athletic stance with a slight bend in the knees.
How to do it
- Inhale and brace your core while pulling the ball slightly toward your sternum.
- Exhale sharply and explosively push the ball straight forward toward the wall as hard as possible.
- Extend your arms fully on the release, following through with your palms facing the wall.
- Catch the ball on the rebound or retrieve it, resetting your stance immediately for the next repetition.
Form checklist
- Keep your torso upright and avoid leaning forward as you throw.
- Ensure your core remains braced to prevent the lower back from arching during the push.
- Drive the ball from the center of your chest for a symmetrical push.
- Maintain a stable, grounded lower body throughout the movement.
Pro tips
- Think about 'punching' the ball away from you to maximize tricep and pectoral recruitment.
- Focus on a rapid transition between catching and throwing to improve your reactive power and metabolic demand.
Make it harder
- Perform the throw from a staggered stance to increase the demand on your core and balance.
- Increase the distance from the wall to require more force for the ball to return to you.
